Going Green Behind the Bar: Sustainable Practices You Need Today

So, back in 2020, we learned about how much our everyday business decisions affect society and the planet and how we could weave social and environmental responsibility into our mobile bartending services from our sustainability guru. But you know what? We didn’t want to keep all this knowledge to ourselves! We figured, why not share some green tips? And that’s why we’re here, dishing out this handy guide to help your bar reduce its environmental footprint and become more sustainable.
Reduce use of disposable products
As bartenders, we use single-use products including stirrers and straws often. But, they are problematic. Unfortunately, single-use items such as plastic stirrers and straws are usually not accepted for recycling and usually end up in landfills. Some of these items even make their way into our bodies of water, contributing to pollution. Get rid of the stirrers and only provide straws when specifically requested by customers. This will produce less waste and save you money.
Minimize ingredient waste
When you’re putting together your drink menus, think smart to cut down on ingredient waste. Tossing out bits of fruits, herbs, and other stuff that could be repurposed just adds to organic waste. And those garnishes that nobody eats? Like that giant celery stalk in the Bloody Mary? Yeah, they end up in the trash too. To avoid waste, ask guests if they would like garnishes before automatically adding them. Here at BarsByBanks, when we’re planning drink menus, we chat with clients about how we can be smarter with our garnishes, make zero waste garnishes, or if we don’t really need them, we leave them off.
Use local vendors
Instead of purchasing from large distributors, try to work with local vendors. It’s a win-win for many reasons. Purchasing from local vendors allows you to get your hands on fresh, high-quality ingredients, helps your community by boosting your local economy, fosters community engagement. It’s also better for the environment since local vendors mean shorter travel times, reducing the carbon footprint of your business.
Stock diverse brands
These days, people are backing brands that are socially responsible and diverse. Stocking spirits from minority or women-owned businesses can actually attract and retain customers who prioritize supporting companies with values aligned with diversity and inclusion. You’re giving your patrons what they want while also making a positive impact in your community. And that’s something that can really enhance your brand reputation and appeal. Not only does this move promote greater diversity and inclusion in the spirits industry, but it also gives these entrepreneurs a much-needed leg up in the market. By featuring products from underrepresented groups, you’re not just selling drinks, you’re helping to level the playing field and give these businesses a shot at success. For a list of brands to support, read our post Black Spirits: Exploring Black-Owned Spirit Brands.
Recycle
With all the bottles and cans we use on the job, we really should be recycling them. In general, most glass and metal alcoholic beverage containers can be recycled. To be sure, check your local municipality’s regulations on what is being accepted for recycling and how to recycle it. Be sure to wash all soiled containers before recycling, then make sure you, your staff and customers are recycling them in the proper bins. There will most likely be upfront costs to set up recycling in a commercial business, but the potential cost savings, environmental benefits, and positive brand impact can make it a worthwhile investment for you in the long run.
Compost
With all of the various ways fruits, vegetables and herbs are used by bartenders, instead of throwing the organic waste away, you should strongly consider composting it. Composting keeps organic material out of landfills where it creates greenhouse gases. To start, find a local composting facility or service to collect and process your organic waste.
Last Sips
Hey, let’s make a difference, one drink at a time. We can reduce disposable products, minimize ingredient waste, support local vendors, stocking diverse brands, recycle, and compost. Together, we’ll make our bars a little greener and our planet a lot happier!
